In a world where the rituals of pet farewells often teeter on the brink of opulence, my project Farewell Paws seeks to redefine the narrative by bringing the extravagance of ceremony back to the simplicity of home. Inspired by the solemn beauty of Chinese funerals, where paper offerings are burned as a symbolic gesture of reverence, this project offers a transformative experience where pet owners can bid their beloved companions farewell in the comforting embrace of home.
At the heart of this endeavour lies on open resources section, a repository of downloadable images and templates meticulously designed for customization. From paper offering template to 3d-printbale urn, these resources serve as a canvas for pet owners to express their love and honour their companions in a deeply personal manner. By placing the power of creativity and customization into their hands, Farewell Paws empower owners to craft a farewell that reflects the unique bond shared with their pets.
But extravagance need not equate to exorbitance. In offering these resources, Farewell Paws provide an avenue for extravagant expression within the familiarity and affordability of home. While the concept of opulence may conjure images of grandeur and excess, this project seeks to redefine it as an experience that is rich in sentiment and authenticity, rather than monetary value. All paper offerings can be burned with the pet, symbolizing a final act of reverence, while the urn, paw print card, and memorial book can be kept as cherished mementos, adorning the home with memories of love and companionship.
In this project, I hope to invite pet owners to reimagine the farewell experience as one that transcends the confines of traditional norms. By embracing the over-the-topness of simplicity and drawing inspiration from the rituals of Chinese funerals, Farewell Paws honour the profound connection between pets and their owners.
